Architecture
Before Construction

We draw before we build. Every commission begins as a set of ideas on paper — tested, sectioned, and dimensioned — long before a single foundation is poured.

Manifesto
Sheet A-02
Fig. 01 — every project begins as a question posed in line-weight, not in render.
Fig. 02 — restraint is a material, applied like any other.

We believe a building is decided long before it is built. The drawing is where a house learns how it will meet the ground, hold light, and age. Everything that follows — contractors, materials, schedules — is the execution of decisions already made on paper.

This is why our studio keeps drawing at the center of the practice, rather than treating it as a step toward a rendering. A section cut tells you more about a room than a photograph ever could: where the light enters, how the ceiling responds to the roof above, what the wall is actually made of.

"We don't design buildings. We draw the reasoning that a building later has to obey." — Founding Principle, Halvard & Wren, 2009

Our clients arrive with a site, a program, and a set of constraints. They leave with a document — plans, sections, elevations, details — precise enough to be built exactly as drawn, and considered enough that nothing needs to change once it is.

Three Chapters

How a building is thought through, before it is drawn to scale.

01

Vision

Loose pencil marks and early notation. Before proportion is fixed, we sketch the feeling of a place — how a threshold might open, where a room wants to face.

02

Precision

Technical sections and dimensioned construction. Once a concept holds, we resolve it into drawings a builder can stand on — grids, tolerances, callouts.

03

Craft

Material hatching and joinery. The final layer of drawing specifies how two materials actually meet — a junction drawn at full scale before it is ever built.

Designing With Place

We don't sell lots. We read landscapes.

Every site is surveyed as a set of forces before it is treated as a parcel — slope, aspect, water, and canopy dictate the drawing long before program does.

House set against a ridge landscape under a clear sky

Ridge

41.2°N — ELEV. +410M

Buildings settle below the crest line, borrowing the fall of the land rather than competing with the summit view.

House near water surrounded by greenery

Riverbank

FLOOD LINE +1.4M

Structures are raised on a datum above seasonal flood, letting the water's edge remain a threshold, not an obstacle.

White concrete house among trees under a clear sky

Forest

CANOPY DENSITY 68%

Footprints are drawn around existing root systems, with clearings dictated by trunk survey, not by convenience.
